Area of Research: Time Domain or Stellar Astrophysics
Description: The University of Toronto invites applications for a postdoctoral research position with Prof. Maria R. Drout in the areas of time domain or stellar astrophysics. The postdoc will lead and participate in observational or data-driven projects broadly relating to the evolution, influence, and ultimate fate of massive stars. Specific areas include multi-wavelength observations of supernova & peculiar transients, electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave sources, and resolved stellar populations.
Qualifications: PhD in astronomy or related subjects. Applicants with previous experience with wide-field time domain surveys, multi-wavelength follow-up of transients, stellar populations in large astronomical datasets, stellar spectroscopy, or analysis of high-cadence stellar light curves are particularly encouraged to apply.
Resources include on-going programs with Gemini, Magellan, Swope, the VLA, Chandra, Swift, HST, the KMTNet Supernova Program, the Global Supernova Project, ASASSN, iPTF, PS1, LSST, and APOGEE-S. Inquires about the position should be directed to maria.drout@utoronto.ca
The nominal start date is Sept 1, 2019. Earlier or later start dates are negotiable depending on availability of the applicant. The position is for two years, renewable for a third year upon satisfactory performance. Salary will be commensurate with experience, and the position includes benefits, relocation assistance, and a research allowance. Applicants must have earned a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or a related field at the time of appointment.

The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work. Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.
