Qualifications & Description

Prior TA experience and familiarity with the operation of telescopes and astronomical instruments. A background in astronomy at the master’s level is an asset but consideration may be given to entering graduate students with demonstrated proficiency/knowledge in most, if not all, of the course topics indicated below. Preference will be given to applicants with an interest and aptitude in teaching astronomy.

This course is aimed at undergraduate students with a strong background knowledge of freshman physics (classical mechanics, E&M, simple circuits, elementary quantum mechanics), math (linear algebra, multivariate calculus), and a rudimentary knowledge of astronomical phenomenology.

Relevant Criterion

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Duties

Specific duties will be assigned by the course instructors but normally involve marking of tests and assignments, responding to student queries via email and online discussion boards, holding virtual office hours for student counseling, conducting remote observing sessions, support of lab activities (including some in-person contact hours).

Rate of Pay: SGS I/II – $46.70/hour (+4% vacation pay or +6% vacation pay if 6th subsequent appointment or above)

Final availability of the position(s) is contingent upon enrolment, budgetary consideration and the determination of appointments as governed by the collective agreement.

Please note that should rates stipulated in the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the collective agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 1 and the University of Toronto.
