Scholarships and Awards

The NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship Master’s Program (NSERC CGS M) provides scholarship awards to high calibre students who are engaged in eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering in Canada.
Awards Value: $17,500 for 12 months (non-renewable)
Application Deadline: December 1, 2022
Eligibility:

Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Have completed, as of December 31, 2022, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies in a master’s or direct-entry PhD program.
*Not* currently be in receipt of a tri-council agency master’s level award (e.g. NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC).
*Not* have previously held a CGS M. (This is a non-renewable award.)
Have an A- average (3.7 GPA) in *each* of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent).

Notes: Admissions applicants may select up to five separate eligible Canadian universities (one graduate department per university) where you intend to pursue graduate studies and hold the award. Please note that the award must be held at the university that has made the offer; it is not transferable.

The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral Program and Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral Program (NSERC PGS D/CGS D) provides scholarship awards to high calibre students who are engaged in a doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering. The CGS D will be offered to the top-ranked applicants and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGS D.

Awards Value: PGS D=$21,000 + CGS D=$35,000 for 36 months

Eligibility:

Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
*Not* completed more than 36 months in a direct-entry program as of December 31, 2022 (24 months for students in the 4-year PhD track).
*Not* have previously taken up an NSERC PGS D, CGS D, or a Vanier CGS.

Notes: Applicants only need to use *one* application for consideration for both the PGS D and CGS D awards (select PGS D as the default award). The highest-ranked PGS D applicants will automatically be considered for a CGS D. Applicants in the first year of the direct-entry PhD program are encouraged to apply for the CGS M (if not already awarded) as this will maximize the utilization of the NSERC awards.

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a merit-based scholarship funded by the province of Ontario with matching funds from the granting department. The OGS is available to students in all disciplines of academic study.

Eligibility:

Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Have an A- average (3.7 GPA) in *each* of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent) or if the student has completed two years or more of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent) on all graduate courses completed.
Have not exceeded the lifetime maximum of government-funded support (2 years at master’s level and 4 years at doctoral level with a lifetime maximum of 6 years of government-funded graduate awards).

Notes: Applicants only need to use *one* application for consideration for both the OGS and QEII-GSST awards. Please note that the award must be held at the granting department; it is not transferable.

Must be an international student (currently holding a valid study permit) at the time of the OGS application deadline date.
Have an A- average (3.7 GPA) in *each* of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent) or if the student has completed two years or more of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent) on all graduate courses completed.
Have not exceeded the lifetime maximum of government-funded support (2 years at master’s level and 4 years at doctoral level with a lifetime maximum of 6 years of government-funded graduate awards).

Notes: Our department allocation for international nominees is two (2). The selected nominee’s application materials will be forwarded on to the School of Graduate Studies for participation in a centralized competition. Please note that the award must be held at the granting department; it is not transferable.

The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII‐GSST) program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in science and technology. The program is supported through funds provided by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and funds raised by the University of Toronto from the private sector.
