The creation of new stars is fundamental to the evolution, appearance, and habitability of galaxies. In this course, we consider the creation of stars and star systems from both a theoretical and an observational perspective. We begin with an overview of interstellar processes and the dynamics of molecular gas, then address collapse and fragmentation, theories for the origin of stellar masses, issues in the formation of massive stars, star cluster creation, and modes of energetic feedback.
