Thesis Project

As part of my pursuit of a doctorate, I have undertaken a research project that seeks to unravel the history of the Milky Way. I examine the chemical properties of many stars across our galaxy. Stars formed in the same place at the same time are thought to share the same chemical composition. Even if they have since dispersed unique chemical properties would allow us to identify stars which formed in a group, a process called chemical tagging. For chemical tagging to work, stars must be distinguished from each other in many different chemical elements, but current methods of estimating the amount of each element in a star are subject to high uncertainty. I am currently investigating the feasibility on chemical tagging using both spectra and the abundances derived from them under a variety of assumptions about underlying star formation physics and measurement capabilities.
