 MEETING OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS

HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE, HELD ON MAY 12, 2009

ATTENDANCE:  A. Choi; N. Gandilo; L. Lança; D.-S. Moon; H. Zhao

POINT OF ORDER:  L. Lança requested that her title on this committee be changed to read “Recording Secretary”.

1.      Health and Safety Committee Meeting Schedules:  As there has never been a HSC in this building (50 St. George Street) meetings are required to be scheduled quarterly.  Next meeting should be in August and following meeting in November.  Next meeting tentatively scheduled for first Tuesday in August, 11:00 a.m.  H. Zhao to arrange the location.

2.      Astronomy Health and Safety Committee Website:  This will be an ongoing project.  Some missing information, e.g., location of first aid kits.  There should be first aid kits in the mailroom, in each lab/workshop.  Also in student lounge and MP 12^th floor.  L. Lança will look into purchasing first aid kits.  High Bay already has first aid kits on each floor, however, N. Gandilo will check. L. Lança will ask campus observer(s) if there is a first aid kit in the dome.

3.     Inspection Schedule and Criteria:  There should be a checklist this committee could use.  Physics should have one we could borrow.  H. Zhao will request.

Time Schedule:  There should be a major inspection annually and common areas inspections performed twice yearly.  The Health and Safety website will be checked for schedule.  Once checklist is received, G. Patel and L. Lança will schedule inspections.

4.     General Issues of Concern (Including Facilities/Equipment):  Three cranes and machinery, fume hood and clean room to be checked, High Bay as well.

L. Lança to let D.-S. Moon know who offers WHMIS courses.

Laser Use signs should be sufficient.
